(a) Which is the outermost shell?
Reason: Electrons enter into M shell after completion of K and L shell in M shell electrons will enter
in to 4s orbital before entering into 3d orbital so the outermost shell is N
(b) How many electrons are there in its outermost shell?
Answer: 2- electrons.
Reason: It is given electrons in M shell are the sum of electrons in K shell and L shell so number
of electrons in M shell are 10 and in N shell are 2 electrons.
c) What is the atomic number of element?
Answer: The atomic number of element is 22.
Reason: But after completion of 3p orbital electron enters into 4s before entering to 3d as per
energy level. So the atomic number of element is 22.
(d) Write the electronic configuration of the element.
K shell (s orbital) accommodates 2 electrons.
L shell (s & p orbitals) accommodates 2 + 6 electrons=8 electrons.
M shell (s, p & d orbitals) accommodates 2 +6+10 electrons=18 electrons
electrons in K shell + electrons in L shell = electrons in M shell (as per the question given)
2+8=10 + 10 + 2 total electrons in the K, L and M shells are 20 and 2 electrons in the N shell.
